Instructions - National Migration Registration - Registro Nacional Migratório (RNM)
Before Traveling
Before departing for Brazil, all accepted students, professors, and researchers must apply for the appropriate visa at the Brazilian Consulate nearest to their residence.
Types of Visa
It is crucial that international visitors arrive in Brazil with the appropriate visa. Failure to do so may lead to significant difficulties when enrolling at USP or attempting to regularize your immigration status with the Federal Police (PF).
For detailed information, consult the General Table of Visa Regimes for the Foreigners Entering Brazil.
For Short Stays - Less than 90 days (undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, and professors):
VIVIS
Passport (depending on reciprocity between Brazil and the foreigner’s country).
Undergraduate and Graduate Students (longer stays - over90 days):
VITEM IV (Student);
VITEM XIII (Mercosul);
Postdoctoral Researchers and Professors (longer stays - over 90 days):
VITEM I (Teaching and Research);
Upon Arrival
Upon arrival in Brazil, you have up to 90 days to register with the Federal Police (PF).
If you already hold a VITEM, you must select the request: REGISTER AS A FOREIGNER IN BRAZIL.
If you arrive with only a passport or VIVIS, you must apply for a RESIDENCE AUTHORIZATION, this is a more complex and time-consuming process. For this reason, we do not recommend that exchange students arrive without the appropriate visa.
Regardless of the option chosen, please contact the Commission by email and submit the required documents:
